I went for a promotion at work and I didn’t get it. And you know what: I am totally fine with it!
The opportunity to apply for a Director role came up and it was in an area that I’m really interested in (people development) so I thought “why not”. I worked hard for it over a couple of weekends, preparing my CV, letter and then, when I was shortlisted, my interview. I talked to many people to understand the challenges of the roles, contacted others who had held a similar position outside of my company, read articles, listened to podcasts etc.. I did the work! In the end, they chose someone else for a very strategic reason which I understand.
I talked before here about how I’m trying to figure out the next phase of my career. With this application, I gave a last go at the corporate environment. I was proud of myself for having the guts to go for it. I have no regrets.
If anything, this last attempt confirmed to me that I’m ready for something else. I feel that it’s coming soon even though I don’t know what it is yet. I want to do something different, either a vocational job for which I would need to retrain, or maybe puting my experience to the service of some younger companies, like a startup. A dear follower of mine just did that and she finds it very exciting.
I’m sharing this here for two reasons: first, I know from similar updates on my career questioning that this is a topic that resonates with many. Have you tried for a last big job? Have you found a way out of corporate that you are happy with? Anything you can share?
Second, I thought, why not calling on my community here! If any of you know of an organisation that helps professionals who have been working for a while connect with startups, can you point me in their direction? It might not be my future move but I’m interested in exploring it.
On a travel related note, we are off to Tuscany this Friday to celebrate our 20th anniversary of meeting up on a summer night in Paris. I’ll post updates on the chat of course!
Hope you are enjoying the warm and sunny weather if it’s the case where you are. Although I am quite ready for autumnal vibes myself.
Updated blog post - Heckfield Place spa review

Cowley manor experimental, Costwolds
From £259 - Check latest prices and availability
After being acquired by Experimental Group (they own Hotel Henrietta in London and Menorca Experimental amongst others), Cowley Manor has undergone a full redesign courtesy of famous designer Dorothee Melizchon. We used to love it and went many times but in recent years, it had clearly shown its age. Initilal photos clearly highlight a full refresh with bold colours, funkier curves and witty objects. The big lounges and the vast spa still look appealing. We have booked to try it at Christmas this year so I'll report back!

A few steps away from the beach in Cap Ferret, the Hotel des Dunes, has been completely refurbished in a chic and chill spirit. Praia do Canal Nature Resort, Algarve

A bit bigger than the hotels I would usually go for but an interesting concept in Portugal. Hidden away in Costa Vicentina Natural Park, Praia do Canal Nature Resort takes connecting with the outdoors to a whole new level. The sand-coloured buildings blend in with the sun-bleached surroundings. And the rooms, from the snug deluxe options to the show-stopping rooftop suite, all feature artisanal wooden furnishings. The Azeitona restaurant continues this sustainable ethos, and there is a Spa and Health Club.
